Natural treatment of Eczema and skin conditions

Naturopathic medicine offers a natural and holistic approach to eczema and skin conditions using nutritional therapy, botanical medicine, food intolerance testing and functional testing if indicated. Through identifying and addressing the root cause of your eczema and inflammation, we can begin healing the skin from the inside out.

Eczema and Dermatitis

The prevalence of eczema and other forms of atopic dermatitis has increased dramatically in the last decade. Atopic dermatitis now affects up to 20 percent of children and up to 3 percent of adults and presents a significant burden on the healthcare system and the patient’s quality of life. Conventional therapy for eczema includes topical steroidal creams, corticosteroids, immunomodulators, or antihistamines, all of which require continued use and do not address the underlying cause of disease.

Eczema is a chronic inflammatory condition of the skin, also known as dermatitis, the underlying cause of which is often a combination of many factors. Allergies, food allergies and intolerances, gut and digestive health imbalances, compromised detoxification pathways, nutritional deficiencies, diet, stress and lifestyle factors are just some of these.
Naturopathic approaches to eczema aim to identify the underlying pathologies (causes) of eczema, rebalance the immune system, improve digestive system dysfunction, support the detoxification pathways, evaluate skin health, and support the body with nutritional, dietary and lifestyle changes, healing the body from the inside out.

Gut Health

What has my gut got to do with my skin? Naturopaths are known for their love of all things gut related. The skin and the gut are both protective and elimination organs, protecting the body from the challenges of the outside world and excreting what the body no longer requires. If these organs are out of balance, if the protective layer of the gut is damaged or more permeable than optimal, substances can cross this “leaky gut” barrier, causing the body to react to substances that aren’t meant to enter the bloodstream. The immune system goes into overdrive and we experience symptoms associated with autoimmune conditions such as eczema and allergies. The health of the skin is a direct reflection of the health of our gut and intestinal health. Eczema sufferers usually have some level of gut imbalance so addressing this is a key part of the naturopathic treatment plan.
